After a brief snippet of a radio programme I overheard, I have to agree with Stephen Hawking. (As if I'm capable of backchat!)
The argument goes something like this.
Considering the numbers involved, many scientists, cosmologists think there is a strong possibility that intelligent aliens exist.
To get to the stage where they can travel to other worlds, they must have control of any aggressive instincts inherent in their particular psyche towards their own kind. Otherwise they, like us, could destroy themselves before they could developed the technology to travel to other worlds.
However, have they, during their evolution, developed empathy, compassion or sympathy?
Active SETI beams out our whereabouts to the known Universe
Stephen Hawking imagines it could be a scenario similar to Christopher Columbus landing in America.
I imagine it as this:
We're in a universe sized Romford pub, on a Friday night, full of drunken nutters. We're sitting on a table near the toilets, indiscriminately throwing peanuts at the largest, loudest piss-head and asking him why he's not talking to us.
